Coming Home For Advent
(Published in News First, December 2006 - monthly church newsletter of the Warragul Uniting Church)

Dear friends,
Perhaps more than any other time of the year December is a time for "homing." Whether it means a break from school, the annual family holiday at the beach, gathering for a meal, or attending special worship, the weeks of Advent and Christmas touch all our senses, stirring memories, awakening embers of losses and hopes, and urging us to seek a place of comfort and familiarity.
As we plan worship for Advent and Christmas, be conscious of these pilgrims in our midst —those who come seeking. We may see faces we have not seen since last Advent. We may see familiar faces that come with fresh grief and questions. We may see visitors who are drawn to our congregation, hoping to connect with something beyond themselves. We may see children and wise ones who come with unexpected energy and hope. Be ready to welcome all of these. Keep in mind the faith that we share and the story that draws us together. Then remember to teach as we go, sharing the story of our congregation's traditions as we sing, pray, and experience worship.
Following the Revised Common Lectionary, we may find a certain level of disappointment with the scriptures chosen for Advent with their focus on end times and the preaching of John the Baptist, rather than messages of comfort and joy. This dissonance is something to pay attention to rather than fear. It reflects the tension in which Christians live during this season —the attraction of hearth and homing in a world of torn places and clashing voices. Honour the journey of our congregation by recognizing both aspects of Advent's call: Christ is coming, and Christ will come again.
This is an important time of year to emphasize and focus energy on our congregation's ministries of outreach and caring. We draw connections through our prayers, preaching, and opportunities to invest time in caring for others.
May this time be one of hope and joy.
Your friend
Chris
